A conversation worth having

Pharmacogenomics, defined.

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) studies how inherited genetic differences can affect a person’s response to certain medicines. Testing can give your clinician another piece of information when considering a medication or dose.

Precision medicine considers the whole person: current medicines, health history, and other clinical factors as well as genes. PGx does not guarantee a perfect medication match.

How it works.

Start with a conversation about whether testing could inform your care. If testing is appropriate, a laboratory may use a cheek swab, saliva, or blood sample. Your clinician reviews the report with you and explains what, if anything, it changes.

Keep your results for future medication reviews. Inherited variants generally stay the same, but scientific evidence, test coverage, and prescribing guidance can change.

Potential benefits. Clear limits.

For certain gene–drug pairs, PGx may inform medication selection, dosing, or assessment of adverse-reaction risk. Its value depends on the medicine and the clinical evidence. Testing does not eliminate trial and error, guarantee a treatment response, or replace your clinician’s judgment.
